Can the EU be understood as a successful normative power
2012-06-19 This paper aims to understand the social-psychological dimension of the Normative Power Europe discourse using ingroup projection as a discursive/cognitive practice of othering. It takes issue with most poststructuralist studies that conduct analyses of Normative Power Europe based on the dependence of identity on difference through the discursive tendency to construct reality by opposites. The normative power approach is emerging as a holistic research programme with the potential to cross both policy and disciplinary boundaries in the study of the EU's status in, and relations with, the rest of the world.
This ability is often referred to as an individual’s normative power and is highly significant in both law and morality. Periodically, India has sought to act as a ‘normative power’ in international affairs, advancing a normative agenda about how states and other actors ought to behave, what norms and rules should regulate their interactions, and what institutions should exist to make and enforce them. The normative power of the European Union has historically been a key element of its foreign policy.
